The Regional Secretariat for the Sea, Science and Technology, after hearing industry partners, has stipulated a daily limit on the commercial catch of limpets (Patella aspera and Patella candei gomesii) in the Azores.
Under the terms of the ordinance published today in the Official Journal, the maximum daily catch of limpets is set at 80 kilos per fisher.
With this ordinance, the Government intends to promote the sustainability of these species and prevent, on certain days, excessive unloads at fish markets, which can cause a drop in first-sale prices.
These limpet species have been primarily exploited for human consumption, as part of the Azorean cultural identity. Therefore, the Government deemed necessary to take measures in order to ensure their profitability.
The Regional Government has been implementing a strategy for the promotion of fish in the Region, through the stipulation of minimum sizes, closed seasons and, now, the adjustment of limpet catches to market dynamics. These measures are intended to ensure a balanced commercial value and the increase of income for fishers.
