Regional Government invested more than 278 thousand Euros in São Vicente Ferreira Port, São Miguel Island
The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated today that recreational fishers who need to beach their vessels at São Vicente Ferreira Port on the island of São Miguel can do so safely from now on.
Gui Menezes spoke during a visit to site of the coastal reinforcement and rehabilitation works in the São Vicente Ferreira Port area. They were completed in July and represent an investment from the Regional Government of more than 278 thousand Euros.
As the previous side protection of the port ramp was destroyed in 2016, there was a need to reinforce the existing protection in order to provide the intended stability throughout the protection structure.
According to the Regional Secretary, this works contract was awarded in December. However, as it is a maritime work, which is conditioned by sea conditions, "it was only possible to begin in March," having been completed before the initial stipulated deadline.
Gui Menezes stressed that the work was "preceded by a public discussion," considering that it is "a relatively sensitive area."
There was a phase of public presentation of the project so that all people who use this space and who have ties to this area could speak out and learn about the intervention to be carried out here," said the government official.
It should be noted that this port, in addition to the São Vicente Ferreira natural pools, is also sought after by many bathers.
According to Gui Menezes, the area "also provides support to some recreational fishers and, eventually, some professional fishers who need to beach in that area, who can already do so safely."
The works include the breaking and removal of loose or weakened concrete blocks from the previous filling of the ramp protection layer, the removal of stone from the ramp protection layer, the concrete filling of the ramp protection layer and the placement of rockfill.
This visit to the São Vicente Ferreira Port took place as part of the Regional Government's visit to the island of São Miguel.
