"School goes to Fishing" project raises awareness of youngsters for the consumption of fish
The Regional Secretariat for the Sea, Science and Technology in partnership with Lotaçor and Santa Clara Basic Education and Kindergarten organised the visit of sixty children to Ponta Delgada Fish Market, an initiative promoted under the "School goes Fishing" programme.
This project aims to provide children studying at Azorean schools with the opportunity to visit regional fish markets in order to raise their awareness for the importance of preserving marine resources and the sustainability of fisheries and fish consumption.
This activity is part of a series of actions intended to acknowledge the value of the fisheries sector with the civil society. It also falls within the Regional Government's plan designated as "Better Fisheries More Income - Strategic Measures for the Fisheries Sector in the Azores 2015-2020."
During the visit to Ponta Delgada Fish Market, each child received an information leaflet produced by the Regional Secretary for the Sea and Lotaçor. It contains some information about the fish species less caught in the Region, but which are abundant in the Azores Sea.
This initiative is intended to stimulate the consumption of fish caught in the Azores sea among children, who may also play an important role in raising the awareness of their parents for the sustainable consumption of fish.
Following this visit, the Santa Clara Basic School will work on the topics addressed in the works done by students.
