Angra do Heroísmo ,  March 18, 2015

Terceira Science and Technology Park to make decisive contribution to the revitalisation of the island's economy, says Brito e Abreu

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated in Angra do Heroísmo that "the scientific and technological capacity is a key factor for the competitiveness of regional companies."

Speaking at the ceremony that marked the creation of the Terceira Science and Technology Park Association, Fausto Brito e Abreu stressed that the creation of this park is an important contribution to the implementation of Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialisation (RIS3).

"The island of Terceira hosts the University of the Azores campus directed to the areas agricultural sciences, animal husbandry and agro-industries, one the main priority axes to RIS3 strategy," stressed the government official.

Fausto Brito e Abreu also mentioned that "the implementation of science and technology parks is a measure of excellence in the context of the economic and social development agenda of the European Commission".

According to the Regional Secretary, the Terceira Science and Technology Park "will allow the creation of qualified jobs, not only in traditional scientific areas, as the case of biotechnology and agro-industries, but will also contribute to the development of cultural and creative industries." Moreover, it will also create conditions for the transfer of knowledge between the fields Science and Research, Development and Innovation, and companies.

The creation of this association allows the inclusion of Terceira Science and Technology Park in the National Association of Science and Technology Parks (Tecparques) and the International Association of Science Parks (IASP) with the aim of optimising the knowledge and skills available in these networks.

The project concerning the installation of Terceira Science and Technology park in the form University campus in Terra Chã "will be completed shortly and, as soon as it is concluded, the Regional Directorate for Science and Technology will launch the tender procedures for this contract work," stressed Brito e Abreu.
