The Prof. Doutor José Conde Azores Oncology Centre, hereinafter referred to as COA, is a legal person governed by public law, endowed with administrative, financial and scientific autonomy, and is a specialist service of the Regional Health Service (SRS).
Its activity has a regional scope and its responsibilities are focused on primary and secondary prevention of cancer; the preparation, coordination and development of organised screening programmes among the population as well as opportunistic screening programmes and actions; the implementation, coordination and development of the Azores cancer registry, and the collaboration in designing and developing a regional strategy for the fight against cancer.
The COA is assisted in technical and scientific matters by the Advisory Council for the Fight against Cancer (CCCDOA), an entity composed of members of proven competence.
