The Regional Director for Health issued today a statement to Regional Health Units recommending the vaccination of people over 65 years old to prevent complications of influenza in vulnerable patients.
According to the statement, despite a sporadic influenza activity, there could be an increase in the coming weeks, as already seen in some European countries.
The Regional Directorate for Health reminds that influenza is a contagious disease that heals spontaneously in most cases; however, complications may arise in chronically ill patients, pregnant women and people over 65 years old.
For that reason, vaccination is recommended, being "the best method for preventing influenza and its complications."
The statement also reminds that, in case of doubt, users may contact the Azores Health Line (808 24 60 24).
