Landslide in Faial da Terra caused one fatality and two missing people - Civil Protection
As a result of the heavy rain that has been falling in the archipelago, as forecast in the weather alert issued following the information released by the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA) reports damages in some infrastructures and the loss of human lives.
A landslide hit three houses in the hamlet of Burguete in the village of Faial da Terra, municipality of Povoação, which resulted in the death of a man.
At the present moment, the rescue teams were unable to reach one of the houses where the two missing people are presumed to be.
A total of 50 firefighters and 16 fire engines from the fire brigades of Povoação, Ribeira Grande, Vila Franca do Campo and Ponta Delgada were mobilised to the field as well as the Municipal Civil Protection Service and the Inspector of SRPCBA.
The Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Transport has also deployed technicians and machinery to the site.
On the island of Terceira, a family had to be evacuated in the village of Porto Judeu and was temporarily housed with relatives.
The SRPCBA continues to monitor the evolution of the situation; further updates will be released when necessary.
