Angra do Heroísmo ,  November 30, 2015

Azores Radiotherapy Centre with centres on São Miguel and Terceira, says Luís Cabral

The Regional Secretary for Health revealed today that radiotherapy treatments will also be carried out on the island of Terceira, through a centre to be operated by the company Joaquim Chaves Saúde, the entity promoting the Azores Radiotherapy Centre.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with officials from Joaquim Chaves Saúde and the Administration Board of Santo Espírito Hospital on Terceira, Luís Cabral stressed that the company responsible for the implementation of the Radiotherapy Centre to be built on São Miguel will move forward with the provision of radiotherapy treatments in Angra do Heroísmo.

"Until very recently, it had been discussed the possibility that the island of Terceira would only have brachytherapy. Today, we are talking about the possibility of having radiotherapy services in operation at two centres, one on São Miguel and another on Terceira," stressed the Regional Secretary.

The Santo Espírito Hospital on Terceira Island, which includes a space for the installation of these services, will have a centre that will also provide the same services that will be available on the island of São Miguel.

Luís Cabral said this project "is made possible due to the success of the restructuring process of the Regional Health Service that, over these three years, has created the necessary conditions to reassure our partners that we now have the assurance of the good operation of the Regional Health Service.

More important than the political decision-making component Regional Secretary noted that the most important was to ensure "the sustainability and credibility of the Regional Health Service."

"The restructuring process of the Regional Health Service is now reaping the results because our partners are increasingly depositing more confidence in us and, therefore, believe that we can improve and do more for the Azoreans," said Luís Cabral.

After the opening and entry into operation of the Azores Radiotherapy Centre on São Miguel Island, scheduled for January 2016, the company will begin the installation process on Terceira.
