The Regional Secretary for Health praised today the Praia da Vitória Volunteer Firefighters for the first place in the "World Rescue Challenge" that took place in Romania from August 30 to September 3.
"This is the first time that Portugal wins in this category. It is a prestige to have an Azorean winning team at the highest level, which demonstrates the skills and quality of training of Azorean firefighters," said Rui Luís.
The World Trauma Championship took place in the city of Tárgu Mures. It involved the participation of 33 teams, representing two hundred firefighters from several countries, such as Australia, Brazil and Canada.
The team of Praia da Vitória Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters, composed of 3 members, has also won, in partial results, the first place in the Standard Trauma Test and the 3rd place in the Complex Trauma Test.
The competition aimed to test rescue procedures in trauma scenarios with simulations of accident victims as close to reality as possible.
In October of last year, a team of Praia da Vitória Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters was placed fourth in the World Trauma Championship, held in Brazil. The next championship will take place in South Africa.
The Region hosted the 4th Regional Trauma Championship of the Islands in the city of Praia da Vitória last April. In 2019, it will host the National Trauma and Freeing Manoeuvres, organised in partnership with the National Rescue Association.
For Rui Luís, "the excellent results now achieved are very encouraging for Azorean fire brigades, in addition to being regarded as an asset for the national event to be held in the municipality of Praia da Vitória within two years."
