Prescription on paper format replaced by digital prescription in the Regional Health Service
The Regional Secretary for Health was the first user to test the pilot project that replaces paper by digital format in the prescription and purchase of medicine. The "paperless prescription" becomes a reality from today at the health centres of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória.
Speaking to journalists, Rui Luís stressed that this is a "historic moment" and "an important step to optimise the use of technology in the relation with patients."
After a consultation at Angra do Heroísmo Health Centre, the Regional Secretary went to a local pharmacy get prescription medication.
Rui Luís stated that, within six months, this "paperless prescription" model should be implemented in all health facilities of the Region.
The new model allows the user to forgo certain medications listed in the prescription and buy them later at another pharmacy. This will also introduce savings in the Regional Health Service.
Each recipe is accompanied by a text message sent to the patient's mobile phone and an email message with information on taking the medication.
In order to have the prescription dispensed at the pharmacy, patients should present the Citizen Card and the prescription code sent in the text message.
In a transition phase, no one is prevented from accessing their medications if they are unable to use the digital option; there is always the possibility of printing the treatment guidelines.
For Rui Luís, the advantages of this model are also extended to the humanisation of services.
"We believe that the end of prescriptions on paper format will give doctors more time to be with their patients and this is our goal. If we reduce all the paperwork, we will have more time to take care of patients," said the Secretary for Health.
