The Regional Government is monitoring the evolution of seismic events that have been occurring since the early hours of yesterday morning on the island of São Miguel.
The Regional Secretary for Health, Rui Luís, and the Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Ana Cunha, visited the Centre for Information and Seismovolcanic Surveillance of the Azores (CIVISA) in Ponta Delgada in the late morning to become better acquainted with the evolution of the seismic activity that has been registered.
Speaking to journalists, Rui Luís pointed out that the Government of the Azores has been "monitoring the situation since its very beginning," adding that the Government, "through Civil Protection, is monitoring the situation together with CIVISA by providing hourly briefings."
The Regional Secretary who oversees the Civil Protection department assured that this monitoring action will continue "to ascertain, throughout the day," the evolution of seismic activity.
"Given this scenario, it takes some time to see the evolution and to effectively perceive the actual situation and its developments," said the government official.
The Regional Secretary urged the population to remain calm and follow the safety recommendations issued by the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service for these situations.
Rui Luís also revealed that "municipal councils and municipal civil protection services have been notified and fire departments are on call. Now, it is a matter of keeping everyone calm."
The Regional Secretary also urged the population to remain alert. In this regard, he stressed that "whenever they feel an earthquake, it is advisable to notify CIVISA because it is important to know in which areas earthquakes are being felt. According to him, this is also essential to perceive the evolution of the situation."
