Regional Government welcomes holding of World Trauma Championship in the Azores in 2023
The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Health, which oversees the area of Civil Protection, welcomed the selection of the Region for the holding of the World Trauma Championship in 2023, which will take place in Praia da Vitória on Terceira Island.
“It is an honour for the Azores to host an event of this size. In addition to raising the archipelago to prominence, it demonstrates that the Region meets the conditions for hosting relevant events such as this one," said the Regional Secretary for Health.
Teresa Machado Luciano stressed that "the holding of this event also reflects the investment and care placed in the training of Azorean fire brigades as well as the results achieved by regional teams at regional, national and international level."
During the award ceremony at the National Trauma and Extrication Championship in May, the Azorean Government launched the challenge to the National Rescue and Extrication Association and the Praia da Vitória Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters for the organisation of this competition in the Azores.
The recently-announced decision follows an application submitted to the organisation of the World Rescue Challenge in Portugal, which was unanimously approved today by all countries at the World Rescue Organisation General Assembly. This meeting is annually held during the World Trauma Championship that is taking place in France.
In the Azores, the World Trauma Championship will be organised by the National Rescue and Extrication Association and the Praia da Vitória Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters with the collaboration of the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA).
This is considered the largest international event held in a simulated environment, mobilising hundreds of participants from various countries every year.
