The Regional Secretary for Health highlighted in Ponta Delgada the crucial role of volunteers who provide support to Regional Health Service patients.
"Volunteering, whether through patients' friends association or other organisations, such as blood donors, reinforce the humanisation of services by bringing comfort and quality of life to patients," said Rui Luís.
The Secretary for Health spoke at the end of a meeting with the Board of the League of Patients' Friends of Divino Espírito Santo Hospital. According to him, voluntary non-profit work adds "values and merit" to the community, which must not be forgotten.
As an example of this recognition, Rui Luís pointed out the tributes paid by the Regional Government last year to blood donors with the awarding 20 medals.
The League of Patients' Friends of Divino Espírito Santo Hospital, with 60 volunteers, is one of three associations that provide direct support to patients in regional hospitals.
"These volunteers, who eventually become informal caregivers, devote part of their time to daily visits to the wards, help feeding patients and accompany displaced patients. We must acknowledge this commitment," said Rui Luís.
During the Regional Government's visit to the island of São Miguel, the Regional Secretary also met with the Board of Ponta Delgada Blood Donation Association at Divino Espírito Santo Hospital.
On the occasion, Rui Luís expressed the Government's willingness to continue collaborating with all voluntary associations that contribute to improve the quality of life of Azorean patients.
