The novel coronavirus, called Covid-19, appeared in Wuhan, a city in China, in December 2019.  Although never before identified in humans, it has been identified as the cause of several cases of pneumonia, with an epidemiological link to a market located in the city of Wuhan.

Despite the intense research under way, the source of the infection has yet to be confirmed.
