The Regional Secretariat for Social Solidarity, through the Regional Directorate for Social Solidarity, and the Local Centres for the Prevention and Combat to Domestic Violence of Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Flores and Santa Maria jointly promote a series of initiatives to celebrate the International Women's Day on Friday, March 8.
The programme of the celebrations, which starts on Friday and runs until March 13, is intended to recall the accomplishments achieved by women over time, particularly in the economic, political and social areas, as well as to raise the awareness of the population for the importance of women's role in society.
The Local Centre for the Prevention and Combat to Domestic Violence of Graciosa Island in collaboration with the students from the Adapted Curriculum Project classes and the Special Education Adapted Curriculum Unit at Graciosa Basic and Secondary School will distribute flowers and flower-shaped pins in the town centre of Santa Cruz da Graciosa and at the cinema room of Santa Cruz da Graciosa Cultural Centre. This initiative will take place on Friday between 10:20 AM and 3 PM.
On the same day, the spot “Men against Domestic Violence. White Ribbon Campaign” will be aired at the cinema room of the aforementioned Cultural Centre from 2 PM to 9 PM.
On the island of Pico, the International Women's Day will be celebrated with an awareness raising action on the issue of Domestic Violence and Violence Against the Elderly - Active Ageing at the São João Social Centre, followed by the distribution of flyers containing messages that encourage men to acknowledge the role of women.
The activity "STOP Violence against Women" is also scheduled for Friday at Praça Marquês de Pombal in Santa Cruz das Flores. This initiative aims to raise awareness for the problem of violence against women.
On the island of Santa Maria, several spots on violence against women will be broadcast on Rádio Clube Asas do Atlântico (radio station) with the purpose of encouraging the report of these cases.
Furthermore, this event will be marked on Santa Maria with various awareness raising actions organised in partnership with the Santa Maria Social Solidarity Development Association (Salvaterra).
The International Women's Day will be celebrated on São Jorge with the organisation of a scavenger hunt under the theme "The Role of Women in Today's Society" at the João Inácio Sousa Nursing House.
The Local Centre for the Prevention and Combat to Domestic Violence of Graciosa in conjunction with the Santa Cruz da Graciosa Town Hall and the Carapacho Thermal Spa will organise a pedestrian walk on Saturday at 11 AM.
Participation in this activity is open to the population of Graciosa. The route includes some of the main streets of the town of Santa Cruz.
All participants will receive t-shirts and in the end of the walk three spa packages will be raffled off.
