Parental education already covered 475 people on Terceira Island, says Andreia Cardoso
The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity stated in Angra do Heroísmo that Parental Education programmes have already reached 475 people on Terceira Island, including caregivers, children and young people, since their implementation in 2013.
Andreia Cardoso spoke Tuesday at the closing session of the Parental Education programme in daycare context, an initiative directed to kindergarten teachers and assistants from various schools in Angra do Heroísmo.
"This programme was initially implemented in the community. Following the identification of other needs, it was deemed appropriate to extend the intervention in day nurseries/kindergartens since 2013 as far as these practices of excellent quality have a positive impact on the development and well-being of children," noted the Regional Secretary.
Andreia Cardoso added that "the quality of educational practices is related to the quantity and quality of the training provided to kindergarten teachers as well as to the establishment of positive teacher/child and teacher/families relationships."
The programme was based on the principles of the Incredible Years programme and is primarily intended to parents or other parental caregivers of children between the ages of 3 and 8.
Providing kindergarten teachers and assistants with positive strategies promoting a quality relationship with children is the main purpose of the programme.
Moreover, it aims to strengthen the teacher/parents and children relationship, developing strategies towards the improvement of children's behaviour at home, in daycare and kindergarten context, and even between peers.
The Regional Secretary emphasised that this programme is implemented in more than 20 countries and its effectiveness already is already proven.
"This programme provides parents and caregivers with strategies for the promotion of positive relationships and the management of inappropriate behaviours," stated Andreia Cardoso.
