Regional Government to pay support allocated under the Special Social Support Programme for Terceira Island on August 18
The Government of the Azores begins on August 18 to pay the support provided in the Special Social Support Programme for Terceira Island under the special and transitional scheme to facilitate the access, increase the amount and extend the duration of social support in the municipalities of Praia da Vitória and Angra do Heroísmo.
In a letter sent today to today to 9,300 beneficiaries, the Government informs that the payments concerning the period between April 2016 and July 2017 will be made before the end of the month, amounting to about 3.5 million Euros.
From this date and until December 2018, the beneficiaries of this special scheme will receive the additional amount on a monthly basis during the payment period of the benefits to which it relates.
The law no.9/2016 of April 4 has established a special and transitional scheme applicable to the residents of Terceira Island under which unemployment benefits increased by 20%, family and maternity allowance rose to 25%, and Social Integration Income increased 20%. The measure aims to compensate for the significant reduction of the U.S. military and civilian presence at Lajes Air Base. This decision had negative impacts on the economy of Terceira and, in particular, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória.
After concluding the processing of regulating this measure last June, the Azores Social Security Institute has selected the beneficiaries and determined the amounts to be allocated. The processing of these funds is already underway.
