Consolidation of tourism sector awarded priority status for 2014, says Vítor Fraga
The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport stressed today in Horta that the Government of the Azores intends to "consolidate" the promotion of tourism in the main tourism markets in 2014.
"Consolidating the promotion of tourism in the United States with the clear goal of increasing tourism flows is one of main purposes, following the efforts we have been undertaking, particularly with the improvement of the number of flight connections," said Vítor Fraga. The government official spoke to journalists after being heard by the Committee on Economic Affairs of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores.
"During the high season, we will have a daily flight connection to Boston and six flight connections to Toronto per week, with a new fare system that is more suited to the actual needs of those who use air transport to visit us," added the government official.
The Regional Secretary also mentioned the definition of public service obligations for the maritime transport of passengers and cargo in roll on/roll off vessels. In turn, “the public service obligations for inter-island air transport will be revised with the aim of reducing costs and rendering the service more efficient."
With regard to public service obligations for air transport outside the Region, Vítor Fraga reminded that "the situation is known by everyone," noting the existence of a "proposal submitted by the Azorean Government that assures a single price for all Azoreans who wish travel outside the Region; it is currently pending approval by the National Government."
The Regional Secretary also mentioned that a working group has been created, as recently announced," which includes a member of the Regional Government; the group will draft a report by the end of November."
"According to the commitment taken by the Minister of the Economy, the political decision will be made by the end of the year," said the Regional Secretary.
As it was announced, Vítor Fraga stressed that the Government of the Azores will implemented the Integrated Transport Plan with the purpose of establishing "an interconnection between air, maritime and air transport, with effective gains in terms of transport efficiency. It is also expected to enhance the mobility of all Azorean citizens as well as of those who visit us."
