Contract work for construction of new Caldeira Velha car park awarded, reveals Ana Cunha
The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works announced that the contract work for the construction of the car park at Caldeira Velha on São Miguel Island was awarded today.
Ana Cunha spoke during a visit to the site where the new car park will be located. On the occasion, she stated that this new support infrastructure for Caldeira Velha is intended "to create parking spaces and to discipline parking as, until now, vehicles were parked on the road occupying a lane." Therefore, this intervention will ensure "safety conditions for parking as well as for traffic on the access road to Caldeira Velha natural monument."
The contract work, awarded to the company Albano Vieira, represents a total investment of 400 thousand Euros with a completion period of about three months. The works are scheduled to begin within the next 15 days.
Ana Cunha pointed out that the park will have capacity for 70 light vehicles and three buses, and it will be built in "two levels, respecting the natural features of the terrain and its surroundings."
"The ground will be covered with grass protection mesh since it allows the growth of grass, being the least aggressive solution for the entire surrounding area," added the government official.
In turn, the access road to the car park, stretching over 300 metres, "will be built using a material that mimics lapilli so as to blend into the landscape."
With this new park, our primary aim is to "prevent the parking of vehicles on the regional road, a situation that was occurring as a result of the increasing number of visitors and the subsequent shortage of parking places," stated the Regional Secretary.
Ana Cunha also added that "road parking will be only authorised for emergency vehicles, ambulances, fire engines and for people with reduced mobility."
