The Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructure announced on the island of São Jorge on Monday that interactive digital panels will be installed in the adjacent areas of the free access Wi-Fi networks on Cohesion islands this year.
José Contente spoke on Monday morning during a visit to the ICT (information and communication technology) space in Velas and stressed that this project will provide enhanced information to residents and tourists, hence contributing to the development of economic activity on these islands.
On the occasion, the Regional Secretary reiterated that the ICT spaces have been very important to improving the technological culture of the Azores. According to data provided by the National Statistics Institute, the Region is at the forefront, along with Lisbon and the Algarve, regarding the number of households with computers, Internet and broadband access in 2010.
José Contente also stressed that the Regional Government has invested nearly 66,000 Euros in the eight ICT spaces on the island of São Jorge this year, which evidences the relevance of technology dissemination for the promotion of a society and economy of knowledge, which is crucial to the future of the Azores.
