Government invests in drivers’ safety and education between Milícias Beach and Atalhada Church
The Regional Secretary for Science, technology and Infrastructures visited on Friday morning the works to renew the Regional Road 1-1ª between the Milícias Beach and the Atalhada Church.
The contract work, with a budget of 1.5 million Euros and a 3.2 km extension, consists in the construction of a new pavement structure in the roadway, removing the existing pavement as well as the pavement of sidewalks, a pedestrian area and a new drainage system.
In the old intersection to Milícias Beach, a roundabout was built to enhance traffic safety and the street lighting was replaced.
The work also included the improvement of the car park adjacent to Milícias Beach (west side), which will now have a capacity for 103 vehicles, contributing to the redevelopment of this area, which is widely used throughout the year. The dividing wall was decorated and the street lighting was also replaced.
Moreover, three speed control radars were installed on the São Roque regional road, under the Road Safety campaign, with the purpose of enhancing the education of drivers. In this context, the Region has registered a significant reduction of offenses and, consequently, the reduction of road accidents.
The highest number of offenses was registered in September 2009, with a total of 274 serious offenses and 14 very serious offenses while only 257 offenses have been registered over the last six months, of which 248 were serious offenses and 9 were very serious offenses.
