The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works has awarded the work for the Construction of Lajes Airport Cargo Terminal to the group of companies formed by Somague Ediçor, Engenharia, SA, Marques, SA, and Tecnovia-Açores – Sociedade de Empreitadas, SA. The contract work has a base price of 4.6 million Euros.
With a completion period of 540 days, this investment will improve and increase the flow and movements of goods at Lajes Airport on the island of Terceira. The intervention includes the construction of two buildings: one where the terminal will be installed and another for forwarding agents and warehouses.
The new Cargo Terminal will be located about 400 metres from the air terminal and will have direct access to Lajes Regional Road. It is estimated to have a gross construction area of 2,534 m2 and a car park with capacity for about forty vehicles.
The first building will include sorting and temporary storage areas for export goods, customer services, sorting and temporary storage areas for import goods, cargo delivery areas, Customs, GNR (National Republican Guard) and veterinary services.
In turn, the second building will accommodate three independent sorting and temporary storage areas for operations to be carried out by other forwarding agents.
The awarding of this work had been waiting for the completion of formal procedures regarding the withdrawal of land for the construction of the terminal from public military domain in order to be transferred to State's private domain and, subsequently, to the Region.
This phase will be followed by the procedures and formalities provided for by law with a view to signing the contract work, which is still subject to an audit by the Court of Auditors.
