Improvement of Pico Longitudinal Road enhances safety and comfort of pedestrians and drivers, says Ana Cunha
The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works visited today the site where the second phase of the improvement of Regional Road No. 1 - 2 (Longitudinal Road) is being carried out.
This contract work, already concluded, included the resurfacing of an extension with about 11 kilometres in the section between the access to Pico Mountain and Regional Road no. 2 - 2. Moreover, the intervention comprised the works to eliminate constraints resulting from lack of containment walls in the platform and in adjacent land, the construction of pavements and definition of the parking strip on the opposite end of the road to provide access to Elderly Home and Madalena Health Centre. These works represented an investment of more than 1.4 million Euros.
Speaking to journalists, Ana Cunha stressed that this work "is part of a series of investments in the regional road network," highlighting its importance for the island of Pico. According to her, " it is one of the important roads that allows people to cross the island and provides access to the Health Centre, being an important area for service operation.
The Regional Secretary recalled that the work allowed to enhance "the safety in the movement of pedestrians and traffic," seeing that "the route was widened and pedestrian walks were created."
Ana Cunha stressed that, despite the existence of a "major financial constraint in terms of Community funding for investment in roads, the Region, with great efforts, has managed to release funds amounting to 16 million Euros for 2016-2020 period."
