Investment of 1.1 million Euros in the road network to improve accessibility in Ribeira Grande, says Vítor Fraga
The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport stated in Ribeira Grande that the investment of 1.1 Million Euros in the road network will provide a "major contribution" in improving accessibility to this city on north coast of S. Miguel Island, addressing the "current needs."
One of the contract works is already ongoing and includes the installation of a new drainage system on Regional Road no. 1-1 between Rosário and Ribeirinha as well as the construction of a roundabout in the entrance to the village of Ribeirinha, an overall investment of 660 thousand Euros.
The other work, whose tender is at the stage of evaluating proposals, is intended to ensure the access to the new Gaspar Frutuoso Basic Education School. It includes a new roundabout in front of the school, a car park with capacity for 165 vehicles and a new street between the Regional and the municipal road that will be located south of the new park. The second contract work represents an investment of 505 thousand Euros.
Speaking to journalists after the presentation of the project on the access to Gaspar Frutuoso Basic Education School, Vítor Fraga stressed that this intervention responds to a new reality that will happen in that area, with the expected increase in pedestrian and road traffic. According to him, the intervention will "create all the conditions to ensure to safety level of traffic flows."
Regarding the intervention in the area surrounding the school, the Regional Secretary stressed that "it is necessary Ribeira Grande City do what is within its powers" so that the work may respond "to the main goals," namely the creation of conditions to ensure the "safety and free flow of traffic in the area, whether it is road or pedestrian traffic."
The government official also stressed that the intervention in the Regional Road no 1-1 intends to "solve a problem in terms of rainwater runoff" by upgrading the entire road drainage system.
According to Vítor Fraga, this intervention represents "a considerable improvement with regard to what previously existed and, as we all know, it often led to the accumulation of large quantities of water." With this intervention, "the situation will be solved."
Vítor Fraga assured that the scheduling of the work was defined so that every section of the road network infrastructure may be ready by September, when the school reopens.
