LREC to carry out re-assessment of area affected by the landslide on Pico Island next week
The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport revealed that the technicians of the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory will carry out, next year, a new assessment of the area where the landslide occurred in São Miguel Arcanjo, Pico Island.
Speaking during a visit to the site, Vítor Fraga stressed that the Regional Government continues to monitor the situation in conjunction with São Roque do Pico Town Hall.
"We must continue monitoring the defined area. Next week, the technicians of the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory will carry out a new assessment in the areas where slopes are more stable so that we can make further decisions," stressed the Regional Secretary.
Vítor Fraga stressed that this was a "major occurrence." In this context, the government official also emphasised "the fact immediate action was taken in order to ensure the safety of the most important asset - human life."
The Regional Secretary also emphasised that the Azorean Government has always collaborated "in similar situations in order to find the best solutions to solve all these issues and this situation will not be different."
"We will be available to implement further measures in conjunction with São Roque do Pico Town Hall; our main goal is to preserve human life and we have clearly achieved it," stressed Vítor Fraga.
For the Regional Secretary, "one must consider this situation from a technical standpoint, especially in terms of stabilising the slope and taking the appropriate measures to ensure the preservation of the area."
