Regional Government invested 4.5 million Euros in the road network of Pico in the current legislative period, says Vítor Fraga
The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport stated in São Roque do Pico that the Government of the Azores has invested around 4.5 million Euros in the road network of that island during the term that is now ending.
Vítor Fraga spoke at the opening of the redevelopment works of the east entrance to São Roque do Pico. On the occasion, he highlighted the importance of these interventions that will make the daily lives of all those who use these roads much easier, also demonstrating the Government's commitment to find solutions for the setbacks that arise.
The government official stressed the importance of honouring the commitment of the Azorean Government, stating that "the multiple interventions we carry out on all islands help us overcoming the daily constraints," thus improving the quality of life of citizens.
The Regional Secretary said the work now opened "responds" to the traffic problems in that area, since the previous solutions "no longer responded, either in terms of mobility or in safety." He recalled that the eastern entrance to the village is an area of convergence of regional and local roads and, consequently, registers an increased volume of automobile and pedestrian traffic; it is also located near the Basic and Secondary and commercial establishments.
With this intervention, stressed Vítor Fraga, São Roque will gain a new urban dynamics by redeveloping one of its roads and improving traffic management capacity.
"We do not just at the present; we create the future according to what is expected and without putting the tomorrow into jeopardy," said the government official.
The work opened today represents an investment of around 250 thousand Euros. It falls within a major investment in the road network of Pico Island, Vítor Fraga said, stressing the purpose to "create better traffic and safety conditions for all those who use our roads."
The interventions carried out by the Government of the Azores on Pico during this term include the improvement of the longitudinal road, whose first phase is already completed and the second phase is taking place; the construction of retaining walls along the Regional Road no.1 - 2; the restoring of the safety conditions in the same road section in the villages of Ribeiras and Piedade; the construction of a culvert over Ribeira da Areia in Prainha.
"These were four challenging years, but we have never lowered our arms and we have always tried to find a solution for every problem," said the government official.
Vítor Fraga pointed out the example of the new project for the Passenger Terminal of São Roque do Pico Port which, in the face of the technical infeasibility of the solutions studied for this project, the Regional Government has moved forward with a new solution for São Roque bay.
The Regional Secretary stressed that the new solution "is progressing well," adding that the project at the stage of technical studies. It is still too early to present the final project, but its presentation will be made publicly, as soon as it is concluded.
"It is this ambition and this permanent desire to do more and better that define us and encourages us to work on a daily basis to make life considerably better in our land, day after day," said Vítor Fraga.
