Regional Government rehabilitates slopes and sections of regional road on Flores Island
The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works chaired in Santa Cruz at the signing ceremony of the contract work for the intervention and rehabilitation of the pavement damaged by Hurricane Lorenzo on five sections of the regional road on the island of Flores.
This contract work is a further step towards restoring road safety and comfort to the island following the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo and the damage it caused.
At the signing ceremony, the Regional Secretary pointed out that “besides these interventions and with regard to the Regional Secretariat for Transport and Public Works, we also have the well-known damage caused to Lajes das Flores Port. The respective intervention is already being carried out by the Regional Port Authorities, with special emphasis on the removal of abandoned containers from that infrastructure."
Ana Cunha noted that the temporary protection works of Lajes das Flores Port “that is now going to take place, although temporary, is large and complex, but it will allow us to move on to the second phase, which is definitely the final."
The Secretary for Public Works assured that the Azoreans can “continue to rely on the Government to carry out all the necessary works, namely on this island, where we are recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo.”
The contract work, now awarded to Tecnovia Açores, S.A., represents an investment of 220 thousand Euros and has a completion period of 60 days.
The work includes the redevelopment of five road sections, two in the municipality of Lajes and three in the municipality of Santa Cruz, which were directly affected by the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo in October last year with the fall of stones and debris from the excavation slope. The intervention will repair the damage to the outer layer, signage and safety equipment.
These sections, covering an extension of about 7,100 square metres, are located on Regional Road no. 1-2, which is the busiest road on the island of Flores.
The milling and repaving of the damaged outer layer, the application of road surface markings and the installation of new safety equipment, such as guide posts, lane markers and guardrails, are some of the interventions included in this contract work.
As part of the recovery works already carried out by the Regional Government due to the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo, all of which already carried out by island services, the Government has also awarded the contract work for the installation of vertical road signs to replace the damaged ones, an investment of about 13 thousand Euros.
