Rehabilitation of roads carried out by the Regional Government ensures greater comfort and safety, says Vítor Fraga
The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works stated in Nordeste that the rehabilitation of roads carried out by the Government of the Azores proves the effective response of the Government to the needs of the population, always seeking to improve the quality of life in the archipelago.
Vitor Fraga spoke at the opening of the redevelopment works of Povoação-Nordeste route, regional road section no. 1-1 between Garcias and Água Retorta. According to him, this work ensures "greater comfort and safety for inhabitants as well as to visitors."
The Regional Secretary emphasised that this type of intervention "demonstrates the desire to fulfil the commitments we have made to render the Region's resources profitable and to improve public infrastructures."
"We constantly seek to dignify our architectural heritage, taking into account the improvement of accessibility, public roads, mobility conditions and quality of life of the Azoreans," said the government official.
"The constant improvements in accessibility are a crucial factor in the unity of the Azoreans, because we believe that only one region will be able to achieve the best results," Vítor Fraga said, assuring that the Regional Government only wants "the best for the Azores and works on a daily basis so that this ambition may become a reality."
In his speech, he emphasised that all municipalities have their specific characteristics, which should define priorities in interventions. The government official stressed that "the route between Nordeste and Povoação deserved special attention due to the calamities that have plagued in the recent past, to which the Azorean Government has never ceased to respond immediately, with interventions on the field."
The work opened today represents an investment over 1.7 million Euros, with an intervention area of about 7.6 kilometres. The contract works were awarded to regional companies, thus "contributing to the revitalisation of the regional construction sector after its readjustment to the needs of the market, "said the Secretary for Public Works.
The interventions included the construction of concrete ditches to improve the drainage system, the rehabilitation of pavements, the installation of safety rails and the placement of vertical road signs and road surface markings.
The work now opened includes a series of interventions carried out in the municipality of Nordeste that allow the improvement of traffic conditions between municipalities on São Miguel Island.
"In this regard," Vítor Fraga stated that "the Government of the Azores intends to carry out the intervention on Regional Road no. 1-1 between Pedreira and Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint, which will include the paving of an area of about four kilometres."
The Regional Secretary recalled that this route was "plagued" by the calamities that occurred in the municipality of Nordeste in September 2015.
Vítor Fraga also mentioned the contract work for the improvement and redevelopment of east entrance to Vila da Povoação.
These contract works are in the process being awarded and assigned, respectively, representing an overall investment of over 2.5 million euros; they are scheduled to start in September 2017.
The Regional Secretary also recalled the works carried out in the application of road surface markings on several regional roads represent an investment of about 1.1 million Euros.
