Some local authorities "should follow the Government's example and lower municipal taxes," says José Contente
The reduction of taxes which the Government has managed to keep through tax differential has been very positive for families and companies, stated the Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures yesterday night.
Defending that some Azoreans municipalities, such as Ponta Delgada, should take similar actions, José Contente stated that they "should follow the example set by the Regional Government and avoid municipal overtaxing." This measure would be enough to reduce the money spent on shows, which would lower the tax burden. The government official added that it is not right that those who demand the Azorean Government to lower taxes "do not do what they defend for other entities."
The Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures presided over the solemn session of 10th anniversary of the elevation of Ajuda da Bretanha to village status. The government official praised the importance and vitality of local power, stating that village councils cannot be paralysed despite the "tough times"; there are always partners aware of their responsibilities that can provide support."
Alluding to the specific case of Ajuda da Bretanha, José Contente mentioned that the Social Centre will receive a support van on July 25 and reminded that the Regional Government is also supporting the recovery of one the most important cultural symbols of that village - the Pico Vermelho Mill.
With regard to the damages caused by the bad weather last May, the government official stressed that the families hit by the catastrophe have been supported by the Government, "which the Government has done in all catastrophes that have happen across the archipelago since 1996."
Addressing at the population, José Contente also announced that the tender procedures for two works to repair the access roads to the villages of Pilar and Ajuda have been launched. At the end of the week, the proposals will be analysed to move forward with the repair works of the damages caused by bad weather as soon as possible.
In relation to the defence of local government, José Contente criticised the proposal he considers to be a "bad and minimalist reform that is detrimental to populations," defending that the National Government is jeopardising "the foundations of local power."
The Regional Secretary defended the autonomy of villages for the services they provide to citizens and urged other political forces to join the Azorean Government to, once again, defend the autonomy of the Azores and, in this specific case, the defence of villages.
José Contente praised the dynamic action developed by the president of Ajuda da Bretanha village council, stressing that he know how to defend and work towards the improvement of the population's quality of life.
