The vessel "Malena," chartered to supply the island of Flores, is already in the Region.
The vessel, about 87 metres long, arrived this afternoon in Ponta Delgada. It can carry up to 100 20-foot containers, including 28 refrigerated containers.
"Malena" is equipped with two 35-tonne cranes and has the capacity to transport live animals in container and fuel. It was chartered for a period of three months, with the possibility of extending the deadline.
The vessel will now be loaded with the cargo that was stored on the islands of Faial and Terceira in order to begin the transport operations to Flores as soon as possible.
For the time being, and in a coordinated effort to supply the Western Group islands, the Regional Government has already requested the Portuguese Air Force to fly to Corvo in order to supply this island with the goods which, due to rough sea conditions, could not be delivered by sea.
The Regional Secretariat for Transport and Public Works is now awaiting confirmation by the Portuguese Air Force regarding the possibility of carrying an additional flight as well as the date on which it will take place.
