Vítor Fraga announces contract work for the renewal of the road section between Ferros Velhos and Ponta Delgada on Flores
The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport announced that the contract work for the renewal of the Regional Road no. 1-2, between Ferros Velhos and Ponta Delgada on Flores Island, was awarded to the company Tecnovia Açores.
Speaking during a visit to the site where the intervention will be carried out, Vítor Fraga stressed that "the implementation of this project corresponds to a commitment taken by the Regional Government," representing an investment of nearly 1.5 million Euros.
This intervention will be carried out along an extension of 10 kilometres, maintaining the route outline whenever possible.
In addition to the resurfacing of the road, which will have a width of 5.5 metres, the contract work includes a series of interventions in the drainage system as well as the installation of vertical road signs and the definition of road surface markings.
The Regional Secretary also revealed that besides this contract work, which is part of a series intervention in the regional road network, "there is an ongoing public tender for a series of interventions to be carried out on the island of Flores. It will cover the road branches of Fajãzinha and Mosteiros, Vila das Lajes road and the Topo Sul Airport road, representing an overall investment of 750 thousand Euros."
These works "are part of a series of public investments planed for the island of Flores under the Regional Public Works Charter (CROP), which include concluded or ongoing works in the amount of 2.3 million Euros and an investment of four million Euros regarding contract works to be launched. By the end of the year, we will also launch several contract works with a global investment of about 2.1 million Euros."
Vítor Fraga reminded that in the context of the negotiations of the new Community Support Framework, "the National Government stated that Portugal, including the Azores, did not need more roads."
"In view of this, the Government of the Azores has carried out a remarkable effort in order to revert this situation and has managed to benefit from an exception scheme, which allows the provision of responses to priority situations, namely the work we visited today," said the Regional Secretary.
