Regional Centre for Handicrafts brings "Creative Residency 2019 - Ceramics and Vegetable Fibres" to Cape Verde
The Vice Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Centre for Handicrafts (CRAA), opens Tuesday, September 3, the "Creative Residency 2019 - Ceramics and Vegetable Fibres" exhibition at CNAD - Centre for Art, Crafts and Design of Mindelo on São Vicente Island, Cape Verde.
The exhibition, which will be open until September 30, features the works created under the Creative Residency held this year on São Miguel. This initiative was developed as part of the transregional Craft & Art project, involving the participation of seven artisans and two mentors.
The Creative Residency project aims to develop experiences that will enhance interculturality and the creation of new products based on natural resources, combining innovation and tradition. It focused on the exchange of knowledge and techniques, in this particular case between Azorean and Cape Verdean artisans.
Under this residency, participants worked with endogenous resources such as wicker, dragon tree leaf, flax, straw and Santa Maria clay with a view to promoting local raw materials and their use in handicrafts.
The artisans who participated in the project were as follows: Aida Bairos, Cristina Bairos and Marina Mendonça (Santa Maria Island), Bento Silva (São Miguel Island) Aurélia Rocha and Manuela Medeiros (Terceira island) and Luis Lopes (Santo Antão Island, Cape Verde).
Guided by Kathi Stertzig and Álbio Nascimento, through The Home Project Design Studio, pieces of enormous economic potential were created using the Region's traditional materials and techniques, and with a renewed aesthetic concept.
