The third edition of the Creative Residency, an initiative promoted by the Regional Centre for Handicrafts (CRAA), is already taking place in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira.
This initiative is the result of a series of visits made by technicians of CRAA and the University of Minho to three craft production units on the islands of Terceira and Graciosa that create craft pieces using the whitework embroidery technique.
The goal of this project is to disseminate this craft technique, through the creation of clothing and home textiles with the traditional whitework embroidery on linen as well as with other craft products using traditional materials, such as basalt stone, wood, wicker, patchwork, fish scale, fig tree pith and wheat straw.
The three working groups created to enhance the Creative Residence also aim to specify the target market for a sub-brand of the certified brand "Azores Handicrafts," create new products, organise an event to launch the products created by the three creative residences and consolidate the brand in a strategy of continuous implementation in national and international markets.
"This Creative Residence aims not only to promote whitework embroidery from a perspective of renewal and dissemination of the Azores Handicrafts, but also to ensure the sustainability of industries and associations, thus meeting their claims," said the Regional Centre for Handicrafts, Sofia de Medeiros.
