José António Gomes was born in Horta on July 5, 1961.
He completed elementary and secondary education in his hometown and graduated in Business Organisation and Management at the University of the Azores.
He began his career at the former Regional Secretariat for Trade and Industry, more specifically at the Regional Directorate for Industry, on a fixed-term contract on April 2, 1987. He joined the staff of the Regional Secretariat for Trade and Industry as senior technician - category 2 on November 28, 1988.
He has headed the Regional Budget Services since November 30, 1988 and the Budget and Accounting Services since September 14, 1993.
From October 1, 1997 to June 14, 2000 he served as adviser to the Azores Regional Section of the Court of Auditors.
On March 10, 1995, he was appointed Regional Director for the Budget and Treasury on a substitute basis until December 1, 1996, when he was appointed as Regional Director for the Budget and Treasury.
