The duties of the IRAE include the following:
- Promoting preventive and deterrent measures for public health or economic offences;
- Publicising the technical and legal standards governing the various sectors of the economy and, when necessary, collaborating with consumer and business associations, trades unions and organisations of economic agents;
- Investigating and preparing cases against offences which fall within its authority and undertaking preliminary inquires into public health and economic infractions under the terms of the Code of Criminal Procedure;
- Assisting the judicial authorities, under the terms of the Code of Criminal Procedure;
- In collaboration with other organisations, ensuring compliance with legal provisions on the requisitioning of goods and services, with a view to their correct distribution and use;
- In collaboration with other organisations and under the aegis of the Regional Secretariat for the Economy, implementing measures destined to ensure the region is supplied with essential goods, services intermediate and finished products, in order to prevent stock-piling;
- Collecting data through surveys and other means to maintain up-to-date knowledge of those sectors of the economy with which its work is associated;
- Inspecting economic activities in order to safeguard the quality and safety of goods, products and services, regulate competition and, when necessary, investigate infractions;
- Inspecting compliance with regulations on the labelling of goods, services and foodstuffs destined for the final consumer, whether pre-packaged or not, and, when necessary, investigating infractions and preparing proceedings against the perpetrators;
- Inspecting compliance with preventive and deterrent measures against the laundering of money and the proceeds of crime and preparing proceedings against the perpetrators;
- Exercising within the region the powers attributed to the General Inspectorate of Economic Activities (IGAE) and the Portuguese Food Safety Agency (APSA), as an organ of the criminal police force;
- Exercising within the region the general, investigative, supervisory and legal powers attributed to the Directorate-General for the Supervision and Control of Food Standards( DGFCQA) in relation to food hygiene and safety.
