International Folklore Festival is one of the major cultural events of the Azores, says Sérgio Ávila
The Vice-President of the Government praised today the organisation of the International Folklore Festival of the Azores, which he considered to be "one of the main cultural events taking place in the Region."
"This festival is undoubtedly an essential element in the promotion of the Azores and the cultural interaction between various parts of the world," said Sérgio Ávila. The government official spoke with the representatives of the national and international groups that will participate in the 31st edition of this festival.
The 31st International Festival Folklore of the Azores, which brings together about five hundred participants, runs until August 16- This initiative is organised by the Organising Committee of International Festivals of Terceira Island (COFIT), with the support of the Azorean Government.
In his speech, Sérgio Ávila stressed that COFIT has managed to consolidate this festival. The Azores host the organisation of one of the main cultural events that "take are held in Portugal during this time of year."
"For a week, the island of Terceira brings together a wide range of cultures that will promote their traditions and, in turn, they will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the reality of the archipelago."
The Vice-President highlighted the significant economic impact that the festival has on the "revitalisation of local economy" and the promotion of the region, highlighting the interest the Azores raise "in the context of the organisation of folklore festivals."
The 31st International Folklore Festival of the Azores features the participation of Portuguese and foreign groups from several countries, including Germany, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, the Philippines, Israel, Lithuania, Taiwan, Panama and Turkey.
