The Vice-President of the Government highlighted in Angra do Heroísmo the growing private investment in new ventures throughout the Region, namely in the tourism sector. It reveals the confidence of entrepreneurs and companies in the development of the Azores, which registered a growth of 2.3 percent in the economic activity indicator.
According to statistical data released this week, the EAI - Economic Activity Index, which indicates the general state of the economy on a monthly basis, registered a growth of 2.3% in June, thus reflecting an acceleration over the positive evolution of the previous two months.
Sérgio Ávila spoke Wednesday at the opening of a hostel that represents an increase of 70 beds in the tourism accommodation offer on the island of Terceira. In addition to revealing "another sign" of confidence, private investment "has significantly contributed to the growth of economic activity as well as to the growth of employment throughout the Region."
Globo Happy Hostel represents an investment of nearly 245 thousand subsidised by Competir+. It allowed the rehabilitation of a building located in downtown Angra do Heroísmo that had been vacant for 13 years and has already created nine permanent jobs.
Between January and June of this year, regional hotel establishments (hotels, aparthotels, tourist apartments and hostels) registered 782.3 overnight stays, which represents an increase of 18.2% over the same period of 2016.
On Terceira Island, where this new private tourism accommodation unit opened, the sector registered a growth over 150 percent in two years.
