Protective products and equipment for COVID-19 with limited marketing margin in the Azores
The Regional Government has imposed a maximum limit of 15% on the wholesale and retail marketing margin of several products, such as ethyl alcohol, alcohol-based hand disinfectant gel, medical devices and protective equipment, including masks.
This is an extraordinary measure that aims, on the one hand, to guarantee the supply of essential goods for the protection of public health and, on the other hand, to safeguard consumer protection and the fair competition rules by introducing an additional guarantee that these products are sold at fair prices.
From the outset, the Regional Inspectorate of Economic Activities has conducted several inspection actions with various economic operators, such as pharmacies and similar establishments, in order to monitor the prices on products aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus as well as to identify eventual signs of speculation. There has been no record of irregularities in prices so far, seeing that these economic operators have acquired these products at very high prices; for that reason, it is essential to stipulate a marketing margin for both wholesalers and retailers.
This is another measure implemented by the Regional Government towards a more effective fight against the pandemic. It is also an important contribution to avoid speculation, thus ensuring that all Azoreans will have access to these products under fair conditions.
The Regional Government will continue to monitor and develop all measures that are fundamental and effective to safeguard living conditions in the Region.
