The Vice-President of the Government praised the entrepreneurial capacity of the Azores, even in adverse circumstances, to develop new ideas for the benefit of regional economy.
Speaking at the solemn session celebrating the elevation of Lajes to village status, Sérgio Ávila stressed that being an entrepreneur "is an attitude towards life in the face of difficulties" and is not necessarily dependent on "an academic degree"; it rather requires "courage, dynamism and a great work capacity."
In this context, the government official stressed that the companies honoured at this solemn session are the result of "hard labour and intelligence" at a time when risk and lack of support are a reality.
During the ceremony, the Village Council of Lajes paid tribute to all traders and industry owners operating in this village for over 25 years.
Sérgio Ávila also emphasised the work that has been carried out for 16 years by the President of the Village Council of Lajes, Elmano Nunes, who will not run in the next election. The government official also reminded that Elmano Nunes was also a driving force in the elevation of Lajes to village status.
The Vice-President of the Government challenged those attending the ceremony to compare Lajes 16 years ago with what it is in the present day." The government official also emphasised the work that has been developed in this village to support the population at this time.
