The white wines Terrantez do Pico 2011 by António Maçanita and Muros de Magma 2011 by Biscoitos Cooperative were elected to the top list of Portuguese wines of the year by the Wine Magazine. These wines were produced from grapes recovered with the support of the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources.
"In addition to the public recognition of the oenologists involved and the Biscoitos Cooperative deserve for the quality wines produced, we are also proud of the work developed by the technicians of the Agrarian Development Services," said the Regional Secretary for Natural Resources, Luís Neto Viveiros.
The Biscoitos Cooperative counts on the collaboration of oenologists Anselmo Mendes and Diogo Lopes. In their cellar, the "curraletas" (small stone enclosures) that contain the "verdelho" grape variety are cared by agricultural engineer Nuno Costa.
Terrantez do Pico 2011 by António Maçanita is a wine produced from a grape variety that only grows in the Azores, unique in the world, which has been rescued from extinction on Pico thanks to the joint work carried out by oenologist António Maçanita, collaborator at Ponta Delgada Tourism and Hotel school, and viticulture technician Susana Mestre.
Luís Neto Viveiros assured that the Regional Government will maintain the incentives for the recovery and maintenance of vineyard culture, taking into account its potential for the production of quality wine, promotion of exports and tourism.
