The President of the Azorean Government, Carlos César, presided over the opening ceremony of the new Basic Education School and Kindergarten in Lajes das Flores on Wednesday.
The Government of the Azores has invested more than 1.8 million Euros in this work in addition to an additional investment of 250 thousand Euros in school equipment.
Speaking at the occasion, the Regional Secretary for Education and Training highlighted the quality of the new educational establishment, which includes a cafeteria, a library, laboratories, music rooms as well as visual and technological education rooms.
Lina Mendes said that this new school infrastructure is included in the Government’s goals “to invest in the reorganisation of the school network and in the renewal of the infrastructures.”
This policy, added the Regional Secretary, “in addition to providing better conditions, has created new dynamics of intervention and the assertion of a more demanding school culture.”
This is the third school opened since the beginning of the school year and another three will be completed soon, Lina Mendes stated, adding that “other interventions in schools” will be carried out until the end of this legislative period.
The Regional Secretary for Education, considered, on the other hand, that school opened on Wednesday is “a fine example of how the Government has cooperated with the local authorities towards the development of the Azores.”
For Lina Mendes, “investing in infrastructures is essential,” but “the commitment of the people involved is fundamental for the quality of the services rendered.”
In this context, the Regional Secretary reminded the responsibilities of the school community, which includes students, teachers, administrative services, management bodies and families.
