Angra do Heroísmo Museum presents "Batteries in the Moonlight" in Pico das Cruzinhas
The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, and the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources will hold the third edition of "Batteries in the Moonlight" in Monte Brasil Recreational Forest Reserve next Saturday, July 8. The event provides an experience that reconciles the natural beauty provided by the nocturnal experience of that space, usually closed at night, with cultural initiatives.
It includes the show "The Love Story of Padi and Balbina: a Strange Story of Revenge" in the old magazine of Pico das Cruzinhas and a musical moment with Dj K7, besides the opening of the antiaircraft batteries positioned in Pico das Cruzinhas.
This activity falls within the Programme for the Conservation of Artillery Pieces belonging to Angra do Heroísmo Museum that are on display in that place, counting on the collaboration of the City Council and the Garrison Regiment no.1.
The programme begins at 8:30 PM with the opening of the anti-aircraft batteries of Pico das Cruzinhas, followed by the presentation of the comedy "The Love Story of Padi and Balbina: a Strange Story of Revenge" by the company "Cães do Mar" at 9 PM. This play is based on the wreck of a famous English corsair vessel on the coast of Terceira in the late 16th century.
With this initiative, the Angra do Heroísmo Museum aims to raise awareness for the substantial size of its collections as well as to justify the permanence of war equipment in Pico das Cruzinhas that integrated the defensive complex of Terceira Island in World War II.
Installed in 1943, a few months before the landing of British troops, the artillery pieces became part of the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo in 1977 and were later restored to their original location in 1987, which implies that they are targets of recurring conservation works.
The initiative also aims to promote a space for leisure and recreation, with physical maintenance circuits, children's playgrounds, facilities, access areas and viewpoints as well as the work carried out on the forest slopes, namely the continuous cleaning actions, removal of weeds and the planting of endemic and ornamental species; the latter are necessary for the conservation and improvement of the 64 hectares that make up the Monte Brasil Recreational Forest Reserve.
The access by car will be limited to the areas in upper parks. It is recommended to use the buses that will be available at the entrance of the Arms Gate of the Regiment from 8 PM.
It is recommended that participants bring snacks, warm clothes and a flashlight in order make a collective supper under the moonlight, enjoying the show given by the night view of Angra do Heroísmo city.
