The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, promotes the organisation of a "Meeting with José Luís Peixoto" at the auditorium of João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive on April 23, the date that marks the World Book and Copyright Day.
The celebration of this event, which is part of the 2015 Artistic Season programme, will be joined by the young writer who will travel to Faial Island, where he will talk about his activity and the importance of this day, starting at 6:30 PM.
José Luís Peixoto was born in Ponte de Sor in 1974. He holds a degree in Modern Languages and Literature from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University of Lisbon).
Distinguished with various national awards, his fictional and poetic works are featured in dozens of anthologies translated into a large number of languages. José Luís Peixoto's works are studied at many national and foreign universities.
The Ponta Delgada and Angra do Heroísmo Libraries and Regional Archives will also join the celebration of the World Book and Copyright Day with the organisation of activities to mark the date.
The Ponta Delgada Public Library will host, also on April 23, the show "Camões is a rap poet," a project developed by the Arte Pública group. This initiative is primarily aimed at secondary school students. Sessions are scheduled for 10 AM and 2 PM and require previous registration.
This performative and musical event is based on an innovative concept that brings the lyrical works of Camões to contemporary experience, through rap and hip hop rhythms. The initiative will be also open to the public in general.
In Angra do Heroísmo, the World Book and Copyright Day will be also marked on April 23 at the Public Library and Regional Archive with the organisation and printing and bookbinding workshops. These activities will take place live at the atrium of Bettencourt Palace from 10 AM - 12 PM and 2 PM - 5 PM.
This initiative will include the live installation of a traditional printing workshop, featuring the collaboration of plastic artist Luís Pinheiro Brum, and a bookbinding workshop, under the guidance of bookbinder João Abreu, who belongs to the staff of the library.
During the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to observe some traditional printing techniques as well as the techniques used to bind books. In the context of this activity, participants will also have the possibility to interact with workshop teachers and try some of the techniques learned.
The World Book and Copyright Day is an event celebrated every year on April 23 by initiative of UNESCO with the aim of promoting reading, book publishing and the protection of copyright.
The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events are available for consultation at the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the electronic address www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
