The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism announced in Velas that the Regional Government will promote the First Regional Meeting of Azores Tourism on São Jorge between April 11 and 14.
Marta Guerreiro spoke Tuesday during the Regional's statutory visit to São Jorge at the presentation of this initiative, which was attended by several agents of the sector.
"This event aims to present and strengthen relations with the entire industry in order to bring together tourism agents while discussing specific issue in each area," added the Regional Secretary.
According to the government official, the meeting "aims to provide a space for debate and reflection, bringing together local entrepreneurs and government officials to discuss issues of interest to this sector, which has become increasingly important in the context of the sustainable tourism development intended for the Region."
The Secretary for Tourism stated that the meeting will be held annually. The first edition will take place on the island of São Jorge under theme "Qualification - Challenge for Sustainability of the Azores Tourism."
"The island of São Jorge was chosen for its beginning due to the great importance of the aforementioned theme in local tourism development," the Regional Secretary stressed, noting that "the organisation of event in mid/low season contributes to the mitigation of seasonality."
"We have been approached about the holding of the rural tourism biennale, which, according to our understanding, is not adjusted to the current needs of the sector. Hence, this meeting will also provide a space for listening and sharing, but with a much broader scope, in the context of the new challenges of the Azores Tourism," said Marta Guerreiro.
