Regional Government certifies "Biscoito de Orelha" as certified product under "Azores Handicrafts" brand
The Regional Government issued in the Official Journal an ordinance certifying the "Biscoito de Orelha" (ear biscuit), a traditional biscuit from Santa Maria Island, as a certified product under the "Azores Handicrafts" brand.
With the latest official certification, the Government reinforces the measure for the creation of the "Azores" brand, as provided in its programme. In addition to handicrafts, this brand will now encompass agricultural products, processing industry and tourism, thus recognising the quality and excellence of regional products.
Created in 1998, the "Azores Handicrafts" collective brand aims to promote the differentiation, dissemination and marketing of its products, particularly in foreign markets.
The "Biscoito de Orelha" is the 15th product to be included in this list.
In addition to the necessary technical procedures to register the trademark, the certification of craft products is also based on the trust and accountability of producers as the main interested parties in the differentiation of their product in the market.
According to the ordinance published today, the two craft production units that make "Biscoito de Orelha" on the island of Santa Maria will be assigned an authorisation number for the certified quality seal in a format adapted to the type of packaging.
All the efforts to provide technical regulations for the Santa Maria's "Biscoito de Orelha" under this certification process have been carried out by the Regional Centre for Handicrafts in partnership with the University of the Azores, through the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
